LADY SAINTS FALL 5-4 IN OVERTIME TO
PIRATES
Schank scores pair of goals in loss
DAHLONEGA, Ga. - North Georgia College &
State University got a goal from Lauren
Schenk in each half, but fell in overtime 5-4 to
Armstrong Atlantic here Saturday evening.
The scoring started and often as Lauren
Cappy put the Lady Saints on the board first
with goal off a pass from Casey Smith in the
third minute of the contest.
The Pirates came right back in the seventh
minute and tied the game on a Lyndsi
Stricklen goal off a pass from Jamie Craine.
The game would not be tied for long as
Brittany Carr slid a shot past a diving Jessica
English in the eighth minute to give Armstrong
a 2-1 advantage.
Schank made sure to tie the game up again
as she eluded several defenders and put the
ball inside the left post in the 12th minute to
make it a 2-2 contest.
Armstrong took the lead once again in the
13th minute of the see-saw affair as Alyssa
Anderson scored unassisted for a 3-2 lead.
North Georgia's Casey Smith tied the game
once again just before the half on a penalty
that she sent just out of reach of the diving
Tracey Mitchell for a 3-3 tie at the half.
Just eight minutes into the second period in
the 53rd minute Kristin Savoy took a pass
from Stricklen and sent it past English for a
4-3 lead. The lead would be short lived
however as Schenk scored her second
goal of the game in the 59th minute to make it
a 4-4 game.
The tie game went to overtime where in the
5th minute Jamie Craine sent a ball just over
the finger tips of a leaping English to end the
game in a 5-4 Piretes victory.
Mitchell recorded three saves on the day for
Armstrong Atlantic, while English made seven
saves for the Lady Saints.
North Georgia will be back in action on the
road Wednesday October 24, as they travel to
Milledgeville, Ga to take on GCSU at 7:00 p.m.
NORTH GEORGIA ENDS SEASON AT NCAA
SOUTH REGIONAL
Men and women both finish in top 20
HUNTSVILLE, Al. - North Georgia College &
State University finished 15th in the men’s race
and 18th in the women’s race at the NCAA
South Regional here Saturday Morning. Alan
Schmitz and Emmy Lawalin were the high
finishers for the Saints and Lady Saints to end
the 2007 season.
The women’s 6k got started first and the
University of Tampa came away the winner with
all five of their runners in the top 15 to claim
the South Regional Championship. Joining
Tampa at the National Championships will be
Harding and Alabama-Huntsville who both
turned solid performances to finish second and
third repectively. The Lady Saints finished 18th
in the 23 team field with 475 total points.
Lawalin ran the 6k course in 24:18.0 to finish
44th, and Tiffany Rives was not far behind in
76th place with a time of 25:04.1. Bea Nelligan
followed just over a minute later in 110th place
with a time of 26:07.6, and Savannah Bryce
finished in a time of 26:24.9, which was good
for 119th place.
Jessica Anderson rounded out the top five for
the Lady Saints in 126th place with a time of
26:55.7, and Candace Chumley and Clare
Madrid followed in 140th and 145th places with
times of 28:17.9 and 29:36.9 respectively.
The Men’s 10k race was dominated by Florida
Southern who scored just 61 points to take the
Regional Championship. Alabama-Huntsville
and Tampa tied for second place to both earn
bids to the National Championship. North
Georgia finished 15th in race with a score of
399, nine points ahead of conference rival
Clayton State.
Schmitz led the Saints with a 38th place finish
in a time of 34:29.5, and Michael Valentine
followed closely with a time of 34:30.0 for 39th
place.
Teale Marchette ran the course in 36:26.0,
which was good for 92nd place, and Josh
Kerzie came in 114th place with a time of 38:
08.9. Senior’s Tommy Stapleton and David ran
the last races of their collegiate careers and
finished in 116th and 117th place with times of
38:35.7 and 38:39.0 respectively.







NORTH GEORGIA FALLS TO LANDER IN
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Christina Barbour scored two first half goals,
leading Lander (SC) University to a 3-0 Peach
Belt Conference victory over North Georgia
College & State University in the first match
played at the NCGSU Soccer Complex this
season.
Lander scored the first goal in the match in the
seventh minute when Barbour found herself on
the receiving of a long ball played from the
back of the Lady Bearcats defense. She
gathered the ball at her feet, and hit a shot to
the far post to beat North Georgia goalkeeper
Jessica English for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bearcats struck again, when
Barbour took a pass from Christin Moss and
beat English in a one-v-one situation in the
17th minute, giving Lander a 2-0 lead in the
first half of play.
The score stayed that way throughout the first
half and into the second half. Lander had
another opportunity in the second half Jessica
Skowron's header from a corner was saved at
the far post by North Georgia defender Elyse
Landau in the 47th minute.
North Georgia's first threat on goal came in the
68th minute when Lauren Cappy took a long
ball from English and beat her defenders.
Cappy's shot was saved at the far post by a
diving Rachael Hine at the far post.
Lander (5-1, 2-0 PBC) scored their third goal
of them match Jannica Finnberg scored on a
penalty kick in the 71st minute.
The Lady Saints threatened again in the 75th
minute when Laura Nunnery dribbled through
three defenders, only to collide with Hines just
inside the 18 followed by a Lander defender
knocking the ball away with an empty net.
North Georgia (5-3, 0-2 PBC) hits the road for
three consecutive matches starting Tuesday
against Erskine. The game starts at 2:00 p.m.
in Due West.





NORTH GEORGIA UPSETS
SEVENTH-RANKED LANDER IN MEN'S
SOCCER
DAHLONEGA, Ga. Avram Allen scored two
goals off the bench, pacing North Georgia
College & State University to a 2-0 upset of
seventh-ranked Lander (SC) University in
Peach Belt Conference soccer action Saturday
afternoon.
Lander controlled the match for much of the
first half, until Allen subbed into the contest in
the 31st minute. After a Bradley Rose shot
that hit the post rebounded away from Lander
goalkeeper Garrett Daum, Allen was there to
put the first goal on the board for the Saints.
The junior forward was in the the right place at
the right time, and beat two defenders to the
ball and knocked the goal into the net in the
32nd minute, giving North Georgia a 1-0 lead.
The goal was just the second allowed by Daum
all season.
The two teams battled for the next 43 minutes,
until Allen struck again in the 75th minute.
After a shot attempt was saved by North
Georgia goalkeeper Brandon Kirksey, the
senior launched a punt from end-to-end,
finding Allen running in the box. The junior
beat his mark to the ball, punching the ball
past Daum for a 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same, although the
tempers did not. After Allen nearly scored his
third goal of the match in the 76th minute, both
he and Daum were given yellow cards after a
collision.
Tempers calmed down for the remaining 14
minutes of the match, allowing the Saints to
register the upset victory. Ironically, the last
time the Saints were on the home field (last
season), they upset then sixth-ranked USC
Upstate.
The shutout was the second consecutive
shutout registered by Kirksey and the fourth of
the season. The region victory was the second
consecutive victory by the Saints over a
regionally-ranked opponent, and third of
the season.
North Georgia (4-5-1, 1-0 PBC) returns to
action Tuesday afternoon against North
Greenville University. The match is set for 4
pm in Greenville.
